Parks and Reserves Legislation
National Parks and Reserves may be established on any type of land with the
permission of the appropriate district authority or the National
Assembly. Under certain conditions, within National Reserves, the
land may be used for other purposes other than nature conservation. Within
Marine National Parks and Reserves swimming, sailing, and
water-skiing are allowed, but permission is required for the passage
and anchorage of boats. All fishing is prohibited, except for
traditional methods which have permission to continue. Forest
Reserves and Nature Reserves, for the protection of forest, coastal,
and watershed resources, are declared under the Forest
Act.
Nature and Forest Reserves
Nature reserves and forest reserves are managed by the Forest Department within the Ministry of
Environment and Natural Resources. There was 16,916
square kilometres (6,531 square miles) or 2.97 per cent of Kenya’s
total land area devoted to forests in 1988.
Management
of National Parks and Reserves
National parks are managed by the Director of the Kenya Wildlife Service.
They are administered by the local authority, but
staffed by national parks staff.
Biosphere Reserves
Biosphere reserves are
protected environments which contain unique landforms, landscapes,
and systems of Land use. Biosphere reserves are used for
scientific research. They are managed by the host government, with different ministries
responsible for each different land use. Research
projects and scientific and administrative training are funded
by UNESCO. The major research project at Mount Kulal Biosphere
Reserve is International Protection of Arid Lands (IPAL).
